Hi Dan and All,
As the Microsoft research project manager for this NSF-MS effort, I can answer part of your question. MS will make no
claim on the researchers data and the researcher can access it through simple web service/rest APIs to move it to
another provider if they desire. For that matter, we do not expect all data used in projects under this program will
reside on Azure. However, there is a more complex part of the story. The National Science Foundation has requirements
for eventual openness on data produced under research they fund. I am not the person to answer any questions regarding
NSF policy. The eventual home for the data will be a negotiation between the researcher and the NSF.

Let me know if you have any other questions about the program. Happy to answer them.
Dennis
Ps: You folks probably know my colleague on this project, Roger Barga better than me. We have been following the
discussions, but we have been so busy getting this thing off the ground that we have not been able to participate much
in the Infratructure 2.0 discussion.

And when the grants run out who owns the data? Seriously, is there a mechanism to pull “my data” from Azure (or any
similar service) and rehost it for any reason the owner chooses?

Dan
