My ears do not conform to the Apple designer's
vision of pinea. i also like noise-cancelling
headphones, especially on a turboprop.

i never intend to buy anything which restricts
my choice of audio transducers. and if that means
i'll never get a new iPod, that's the way it goes.

Has anybody checked to verify that Sculley or Amelio
are not back as substitutes? maybe that would explain
such an incredibly stupid decision.

There is ZERO confirmation of an authentication chip, only  
speculation.  The study by iLounge was hardly "careful" and  
announcements from the EFF have been nothing more than FUD.

What they found is not at all surprising - headphones that don't have  
the buttons to control volume and play, can't control volume and  
play.  The shuffle will play music but with no control. That is NOT  
DRM.  (it is a different kind of lock-in, but that's a wholly separate  
argument and driven by design choices)

Headphones with the buttons will control the shuffle, those without,  
cannot.   3rd party products have been announced that have these  
buttons.  Anything beyond this is pure speculation and irresponsible  
FUD.

Sounds right -- proprietary interfaces like on the iPod -- same old  
Apple.

An Apple source has suggested to me that this isn't actually DRM,
but actually basic control linkages, but he is not in a position
to have definitive info on this so it can be only be viewed
as supposition at this point.

Addicted to billable silos.

I understand the justification for treating the system as a whole. How  
is this different Apple owning the Mac silo and using it to design  
better products. Of course it’s not benign – there’s an iPod ecology  
that Apple does use to exert control and extract value from every  
element along the chain.

Controlling the value chain does come at a price. The tragedy is that  
there is so little protest about the endemic efforts frustrate the US  
Constitution’s goal of limiting the control of innovation and  
encouraging disclosure and sharing.

We see this with FTTH which is typically about designing system for  
the billable application (The Internet as TV). It’s unfortunate that  
cities model themselves after Telcos rather building infrastructure  
that can save lives even if it isn’t billable as minutes.
