Of course, if you didn't have corporations, then people who wanted to
create large-scale research and teaching organizations would have to
agree to back any financial losses those institutions faced with their
personal resources.  And a fellow who invented a new energy-efficient
engine would be personally liable for the lawsuits of the big
corporations trying to stifle his little startup.  The ingenuity might
be a little more functional than Mr. Bierce wanted to say.
