Dave:

Restrictions on cell phone use while driving are a good reason
to take the bus. I find that it's possible to make extremely good
use of public transit during off-peak hours to get from place to
place in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti by using that time to twitter,
return phone calls, make calls, and otherwise do mobile computing.

If you do have to drive, you have to park; a lot of grief is spent
circling for parking. I've been working on some bits of infrastructure
to deal with that, see the first demo of it for a handful of Ann Arbor
parking facilities at

with this story

describing some parts of the system.

The prediction challenge in this is to determine future parking availability,
not current availability, so that you can know with reasonable certainty
which lot will be free 30 minutes before you get there. The other more
interesting prediction challenge is a geospatial one - figuring out where the bus will be so that even if it's off schedule you can still catch it in time to make your meeting. Transit geospatial data modeling is hard - you have
to come up with some massively parallel model that makes some sense
of weather, traffic, accidents, delays due to passengers climbing over
snowbanks -
and most of that advanced modeling perspective is not readily available
in an easy to use format by passengers.

thanks

Now that the Transportation Department has confirmed that Americans
are still driving less, even with lower gas prices (down 5.3 percent
in November alone as seen here
http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/ohim/tvtw/08novtvt/08novtvt.pdf ) I predict
places that have enacted restrictions on cell phone usage in cars,
particularly "hands-free" requirements, will attempt to claim that the
decline in accidents (caused by fewer miles driven) is due to these
cell phone restrictions.
