WASHINGTON--A federal appeals court tossed out the Federal Communications Commission's 30% ownership cap on cable companies Friday, citing increased competition in the pay-TV market. The decision paves the way for Comcast Corp., which challenged the cap, and other large cable operators to expand.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit said the FCC "failed to demonstrate that allowing a cable operator to serve more than 30% of all cable subscribers would threaten to reduce either competition or diversity in programming."

The decision effectively kills of the 30% ownership cap, originally put into place in 1993 to limit the number of subscribers large cable operators could serve. (Read the decision.)
