Bob, it may have been clear to you that the plan would be voted down, but you were in the smallest of minorities. EVERYONE thought a deal was done here; the votes were counted and recounted. As Dave so rightly says below, you don’t ever bring a bill to the floor unless you’re dead bang sure it’s going to pass or fail (to make your point). The backers of the bailout DID have the votes until the roll call was actually issued. Republicans flipped going into the chamber to vote; the backers of the bill (on both sides of the aisle) were truly blind-sided.

 Dave,

Can anyone on IP explain why the “rescue bill” (aka “bailout”) was brought to a vote when it was clear that it would lose? The whole idea was to restore confidence and the circus after the vote did more damage than the vote itself. Does anyone on Capitol Hill understand that markets work on two principles, fear and greed? Watching the alleged “leaders” act like a bunch of kindergarteners only stokes the fear. Anyone for term limits?
