Hi Dave.

For IP if you wish.

The notion of Internet access on airplanes is as old as the first commercial applications on the net. It occurs that the delay in giving passengers, bovine and otherwise such access has been delayed for reasons that are as absurd as most airlines' basic operations/ economic paradigms. And in the same category of cutting edge thinking of prohibiting the use of mobile phones on airlines. Oh yes. That should be/should have already happened.

Foolish stuff. At the end of the day, airlines' share of SMS revenues will eclipse any revenues they dreamt of generating from on board telephones.

I implore the fine thinkers among the airlines' leaders (now, there is a veritable intellectual Rubiks' cube): think out what you will do when I get really fed up with the dude in the adjacent seat who goes thru his second auxiliary battery, having a 3 hour loud and animated conversation in a language I don't speak. At least he can extend me the courtesy in speaking one of the languages I speak so that I can listen in ! Perhaps I can offer ideas, suggestions, concepts, matrices (behavioral or otherwise) or prevent imminent suicide.

As to internet access, that is a given. As a practical matter, airlines will start with some filters which will quickly mature to many and rather inclusive filters. I can see AA and others restricting browser access, for instance, to a browser of the airlines' choice (by contract) branded and tailored for airline use. The Singapore Airlines GOOGLE! Of course that will happen!

It is a clear revenue generating opportunity.

No matter. As long as the good folks jammed in seats with 17% less leg room then required by ordinary homosepians can retrieve and send email.

As to bovine vs. business/first class, Lauren, you can alway buy a round trip first class seat 'with shower' facilities from Los Angeles to Sydney for only $24,000.00. Now that is a lot of hamburgers.

Regards.

Steve.

Dave,

How is American Airlines defining pornography again? Topless photos?
Fully naked photos? Nasty textual descriptions? Can passengers
browse to the Playboy Web site, or the illustrated
sexually-transmitted diseases prevention section of a health site?
Does this prohibition only apply to "porn" -- or are non-sexual
"violent and disgusting" images sites also forbidden?

Seriously, will passengers be able to access Google Images or
Flickr? YouTube? There's no telling what sorts of goodies will pop
up on those that *someone* snooping at your laptop might find
upsetting! We can't have anyone upset regarding what *you're*
looking at now can we?

Of course we know what AA will likely do. They'll presumably use
one of the commercial filtering services that employ arbitrary block
lists and can usually be trivially bypassed via simple proxies and
other means.

And like most other Internet censors, AA will probably keep adding
to the prohibited list over time, in a desperate but hopeless attempt
at information control for ostensibly noble aims.

If AA put more effort into treating their passengers as at least a
higher class of cattle instead of playing Internet sex cop, we'd
all be better off.

Dave,

To update the earlier discussion of this topic, according to an AP=20=20 story in today=92s New York Times, American Airlines announced yesterday=20=
=20
that it =93would filter an in-flight Internet service to block=20=20
pornography sites after complaints from flight attendants and=20=20
passengers.=94 However, the article also noted that =93American...said it=
=20=20
had not received reports that passengers were viewing =91inappropriate=20=
=20
content=92 on the Gogo in-flight service but said filtering was =91an=20=20 appropriate measure to take.=92 So, apparently a pre-emptive action=20=20
rather than one based on actual use.

What=92s the expectation on when a complaint will be filed at the FCC=20=20 alleging that AA=92s action violates the Commission=92s Broadband=20=20
Principles?
