Subject: Senior Public Interest Fellowship

Dave -- For distribution via IP if you choose. This is a notice offering a senior public interest fellowship at CDT. It is a substantial position and offers someone a great opportunity, especially if he or she is transitioning from one career to another and wants to step back and have the ability to concentrate on a single project.

Cheers -- Brock

Center for Democracy & Technology Senior Public Interest Fellowship

The Center for Democracy & Technology is seeking applications from senior professionals – lawyers, journalists, technologists, entrepreneurs, academics, government officials and others – to spend an exciting year at CDT working on cutting edge Internet and technology policy issues. As an integral member of the CDT staff, the Senior Fellow will pursue a project of his or her design in support of CDT’s policy goals, while contributing to the full range of CDT activities. The program will support one Fellow per year. Applications for the inaugural Fellowship, to begin January 2009 or thereafter, are due December 1, 2008.
The Senior Fellowship Program - Overview

The Senior Fellow will devise and carry out a project designed to make a concrete and substantial contribution to the development of public policy in one of CDT’s core areas: free expression, consumer privacy, health privacy, security and freedom (government surveillance), digital copyright, Internet standards and governance, and open government. The project may focus on policy development at the state, federal or international level.

The Fellowship project should leverage the capabilities, expertise, and reputation of both the Fellow and the permanent CDT staff, with the dual purpose of expanding CDT’s influence and developing the Fellow’s understanding of Internet policy. We expect the Fellow to bring new perspective, knowledge and energy to CDT, while at the same time gaining skills and other assets for the next stage in his or her career. We expect the Fellows to retain an ongoing relationship with CDT after their one-year term, continuing to support CDT’s values and goals.

Fellowship Activities and Expectations

The Fellow will focus mainly on one substantive area, developing a body of work consisting of one or more published products, broadly defined to include books, articles, draft legislation, legal briefs, RFCs or other contributions to standards processes, widgets, code, applications and any other product of lasting value. Both written and multimedia projects are encouraged.

In addition, the Senior Fellow will be expected to write shorter articles for op-ed pages or online outlets and blog posts, policy posts, and other materials for the CDT website. The Fellow may testify before Congress or regulatory bodies, speak at workshops and conferences, and engage with the traditional and new media.

The Fellow will work full time for approximately one year in CDT’s Washington, DC office. The Fellow will be fully integrated into CDT’s staff and will participate in the daily life of the organization, including staff meetings, working groups, strategy development discussions, and public events. The Senior Fellow will be expected to contribute to the collaborative life of CDT by providing insight within the Fellow’s particular field of expertise and beyond.

Extended fieldwork or research at other locations cannot be supported. However, reasonable travel will be covered when it is related to the Fellow’s project. Fellows will be expected to complete their projects within the period of residency.

Salary will be based on experience and compensation history. CDT offers excellent benefits, including health and dental coverage.

About CDT

By spending a year at CDT, the Senior Fellow will be entering the slipstream of critical thinking and policy development on issues affecting the future of the digital age. Founded in 1994, CDT is a non-partisan, non-profit organization with offices in Washington, DC and San Francisco, CA, working to keep the Internet open, innovative and free. CDT testifies before Congress, brings groundbreaking lawsuits, conducts original research at the intersection of technology and policy, and convenes diverse working groups for dialogue and consensus-building. The CDT staff includes some of the most respected and experienced advocates in the field of Internet policy. The organizational culture strongly favors “issue cross-pollination,” wherein CDT issue experts routinely trade ideas and discuss policy linkages across projects.

Eligibility and Application Process

The Fellowship is intended for a senior person with a stellar record of performance and productivity. There are no specific educational requirements. The main criterion will be whether an applicant can bring thought leadership and expertise to CDT.

To apply, interested persons should present a plan for what they wish to accomplish in one or more of CDT’s core areas. The plan should include the production of at least one major product, as defined above. CDT senior management will work with applicants to define project proposals that support CDT’s mission.

Applicants should submit their Fellowship plan with a cover letter explaining their interest in CDT and how they see the Fellowship fitting into their career path, a resume or curriculum vitae, a writing sample, and contact information for three references to CDT Office Administrator Danielle Wiblemo (dani () cdt org). Deadline: December 1, 2008.
