“It is not a free service,” Mr. Nelson said. “It didn’t cost us zero to build or to buy spectrum rights.”

What is telling about this statement is he is citing no direct relationship between the cost of SMS and their expenses. This is the fatal flaw in the telecom model -- a complete lack of transparency and thus market forces can’t act rationally. Why can’t they use this rationale charging us for unanswered calls? After all, they are just messages like SMS and it’s only policy that prevents such charges.

I wonder if this is a sign of the telecom abyss as they try to service their debt while the economy is troubled. The tragedy is that such actions take money away from an economy that is already being taxed by telecom for the cost of taxing them for …
