Dave,

Let's not forget that in the US, perhaps as an artifact of the billing system where airtime costs money (dialing AND incoming calls), we pay to receive text messages. Thus, carriers make perhaps twice as much per text. To compare, in India, SMS (text) messages can cost as little as $0.01, with free incoming.

What I really hate is text spam (thankfully, there is yet limited telemarketing to cell phones). Sure, carriers are instructed to refund the $0.20 if we call, complain, and show them it was spam. 45 minutes to do that...no thanks.

Sure, there are ways to minimize texting spam, but the best methods cut down useful automated messages as well.

Rahul

Well of course they don't want to reveal their costs. If it cost them 10 mils per message I'd be surprised. They are using "what the market will bear" pricing. Keep in mind that the marketplace is paying >$1 for a little bottle of tap water.
