At the time they were running a DEC PDP-8 in the basement of the Herman Brown building on-campus. We typed PL/1 programs onto punch cards, put the cards together with a rubber band, and stuck the stack into a slot to be run. A half-hour later we'd get back a print-out. Mine usually had an error in the 4th or 5th line. (I'm ADD, not OCD.) This is what Dr. Kennedy had to work with when he started out. Today Rice is among the leading computer schools in the country, and he had a lot to do with that. Wish I were younger and could have gone through the whole program again... He was 61. "Rice has lost one of its great intellectual leaders and a great human being," Rice President David Leebron said. "Ken Kennedy early on realized the power of computers to address real problems that confront people and the earth. His most recent contributions included using bioanalysis to help work on health issues like cancer. Ken leaves a great legacy for Rice and for mankind. He will be missed." Kennedy was known the world-over for his expertise in programming language implementation and high-performance computing - two disciplines he'd first been exposed to during graduate studies at NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematics in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Kennedy was one of the first graduate students in the new field of computer science and he credited his Ph.D. advisor, Jack Schwartz, with opening his eyes to the possibilities of high-performance computing. Kennedy authored more than 200 technical articles and two books. He was a fellow of the ACM, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In recognition of his achievements in compilation for high-performance computer systems, he was given the 1995 W. W. McDowell Award, the highest research award of the IEEE Computer Society. http://www.media.rice.edu/media/NewsBot.asp?MODE=VIEW&ID=9268& Jan Odegard - -- Jan Erik Odegard, Executive Director, CITI Computer & Information Technology Institute | Duncan Hall 1084 CITI MS-39 | Rice University | 6100 Main St. | Houston, TX 77005 odegard () rice edu | Phone: +1 713.348.3128 | Fax: +1 713.348.6182 The University of Texas at Austin 4030-2 W Braker Lane, Austin, TX 78759 (512) 232-9608 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: PGP Desktop 9.5.3 (Build 5003) Charset: US-ASCII wsBVAwUBRctVEGnfFhwmXlFCAQjTzAgAh32u3tg70zyIwztpey/OmGc1OrGEQJeD 2UyPTh18gjcRGbcyEExHuV/ZRLNZkPzl11wEaKuA9ict5Uzo7qayZBWs9DQ0A4uv O6XhDkJp7k1D7YYv6imYgSMULLdTXwYuKmZmSwVqw2w3AkU4IfcL01w7imBqf4Pw hiHjgdKaUBdTrC6jtlUERG3XI8KCMt58Uzk/u8x5rFezGn7OsAAr02tbeilX7Q99 zddRzcs4JXzVlunQPXF1r6QenXOAQGigWvK9dnhxxEOlpSIjOT+7PLX5Zc1ICmP2 Rh12LrgdfJM6as3PcRrZaRXgGoz56JUJNUmhJz7/i0uevJJBvUilvg== =ci10 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ------------------------------------------- Archives: http://archives.listbox.com/247/ Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
