Dave,

Ole is right: Apple moved its software buiness model to subscription some years ago, without really saying as much. Every 12 to 18 or so months there's a new version of OS X, QT, iLife apps et al. and the price is relatively modest (compared to Microsoft anyway), with no upgrade pricing (except for their high-end video apps which are more traditionally priced, I think) . So newcomers get a deal (come on in, Switchers), and long-time users get pricing that's similar to upgrade prices for mainline apps like Office.

In the years after I left Apple, I noted that Apple's annual software sales and profit were very similar numbers: if they sold $300 million in software, annual profit was around $300 mil. Shareholders are probably happy that Apple is still able to command significant high-margin software revenue: Mac users may be less happy about the arrangement... especially when Apple offers the new version as a 'security patch.'

Dave,

You didn't read the fine print:

"Important notice to QuickTime Pro users

Installation of QuickTime 7 and later will disable the QuickTime Pro
functionality in prior versions of QuickTime, such as QuickTime 5 or
QuickTime 6. If you proceed with this installation, you must purchase a
new QuickTime 7 Pro registration code to regain QuickTime Pro
functionality. After installation, visit www.apple.com/quicktime to
purchase a QuickTime 7 Pro registration code."

If you already paid for QT 7, you're good to go, otherwise you need to pay
the upgrade price. Nothing unusual here.
