Law firms and lawyers like these off-shore services. Many US law firms already use them for basic research, filling out forms, indexing documents for litigation, etc. Offshoring of these functions doesn't threaten US lawyers: rather, it frees them to deal with clients, appear in court, negotiate deals...all the face-to-face functions that can't be out-sourced. There is also the potential that American clients will get better legal service at lower costs. That said, these offshore services are a threat to some clerical and paralegal jobs in the US. But it is likely that American clerks and paralegals--rather than $350-$400/hour lawyers--will supervise the off-shore workers, so while there will be fewer US positions, those positions will have more responsibility and hopefully higher wages. Finally, off-shoring back office functions will allow small firms and solo practioners who can't afford large clerical/paralegal staffs to compete with larger firms. Clients may be billed for these services at the $120/hour rate noted in the post, so the "back office" becomes a good profit center and may keep small firms afloat. Or, clients will pay less or get more research for the same fee...good for the small litigant, individual clients. ("Off-shoring" is more accurate than the too-polite, intentionally-ambiguous "outsourcing"!) At first, off-shoring "only" impacted low-income (i.e., politically helpless) workers. But as we all know, it's now rapidly and increasingly impacting Americans in white-collar, professional, engineering and technical positions. Nothing so far, has slowed that outflow of jobs -- be they poor-paying or good. But, perhaps the following "threat" MIGHT soon "encourage" some changes! It's excerpted SPAM, captioned "Outsourcing of your Legal Requirements." Although they're offering back-room services for lawyers, it seems like they could equally be offering many up-front legal services! I mean ... geee ... why should the lawyers for those "American" conglomerates (including most would-be politicians) be exempted from the opportunity to face $15/hour competition ... so they, too, can seek employment at a local McDonalds? [Note the comment about "cutting your current costs to at least one-eighth". I.e., the back-room services they're offering are presumably billed-out to American lawyers' clients at $120/hour or more!] --jim At 7:31 PM +0530 03/01/2006, "Aggarwal, Dhiraj" <info () e-bookservices com> wrote:
