Colleagues,

I am on the screening committee for the next Assistant Director of  
the CISE directorate at the National Science Foundation.   The  
committee is currently seeking nominations for candidates to succeed  
the current AD, Dr. Peter Freeman.   Peter has ably led CISE through  
a number of changes and challenges, and the next AD will face a  
number of new challenges as well as opportunities to help influence  
national computing research policy and funding in the coming years.

Candidates may be nominated by anyone, or self-nominated.    
Candidates do not need to be certain that they want the job (yet) --  
after the screening committee comes up with a short list of  
candidates, NSF management will discuss the position with candidates  
to determine interest and best fit.  Thus, feel free to nominate  
people you believe to be well-qualified candidates even if they might  
not yet be sure that they want the position -- or may not have even  
considered it!

Good candidates are those who:
    * have a notable record of achievement in research and teaching
    * have strong "people skills"
    * have good administrative skills
    * are excellent communicators
    * have some vision and involvement with computing beyond a narrow  
area of expertise

Candidates may currently be in private industry or government  
positions as well as in academic positions.

Nominations can be made via email to <cisesrch () nsf gov>.   More  
details may be found in the "Dear Colleague" letter by Dr. Arden  
Bement, the director of NSF; a copy of that letter is enclosed, and a  
copy may be found at <http://homes.cerias.purdue.edu/~spaf/trans/NSF- 
CISE.pdf>.  I expect that a copy will also be placed on the NSF CISE  
website in the coming days.

Please help the committee identify someone excellent who can help us  
all advance the field and NSF's mission.   You can do this through  
nominating qualified individuals, and by passing this call on to  
others (and other mailing lists) where it will reach qualified  
individuals.

And when you get an opportunity, thank Peter Freeman for his service  
to the community, with his time at NSF simply being the latest instance.
