French tell Apple to open iTunes

Apple likely to say Non
By Nick Farrell: Tuesday 14 March 2006, 08:24

THE FRENCH government is on the verge of trying to force the maker of entertainment gear, Apple to open its digital juke box to rival players. The French government is pushing through a law that enables consumers to legally use software that converts digital content into any format.

This would force Apple to open its proprietary iTunes to business rivals or face the music.

Apple is expected to throw its toys out of the pram if the law is enacted and withdraw its iTunes from France. Maybe Apple hopes that this will lead to mass migration of Apple refugees out of the country and bring the French computer-based art, design and music industry to its knees.

According to Reuters, the law has some other interesting bits. It will no longer be illegal to crack digital rights management if it is to enable the conversion from one format to another.

You can read the yarn here. ยต
