It looks like the Election Assistance Commission isn't going to buy
it.  According to
http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/us/AP-Electronic-Voting.html , they
just rejected a proposal by Ron Rivest that "closely mirrored a report
released last week that warned that paperless electronic voting
machines are vulnerable to errors and fraud and cannot be made
secure."  The issue seems to be that they don't support -- to my way of
thinking, don't understand -- the threat:  "Some panel members who
voted against the proposal said they support paper records but don't
think the risk of widespread voting machine meltdowns are great enough
to rush the requirement into place and overwhelm state election boards."
