"USPTO Issues Double-Patenting Rejection on Genentech's 29-Year Patent"

In a preliminary ruling, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued a double-patenting rejection on a Genentech patent indicating that the patent, awarded in 2001, covered basically the same invention as an earlier Genentech
patent that was set to expire next March.

background:
"Celltech gets a patent in 1989. Genentech fights it. They reach an agreement in 2001, tell the PTO to vacate the original patent and issue a new one ... but it's dated 2001 so a patent on some of the underlying tech involved in making
protein antibodies is extended from 2006 to 2018."
