Subject: Great experiences at the Mooooveeees

i'm delighted that the cinema experience is not completely
dead and gone, and that some operators are putting serious
efforts into (re)creating an experience people might actually
pay to have. i had the great fun of seeing "Who Framed Roger
Rabbit" on the opening day of both the film and the newly
restored "Alhambra" in San Francisco. the karmic match of
twin retro-revivals made for an incredible experience the likes
of which i'd only heard described wistfully by my parents.

however, in spite of the most noble efforts, the vast majority
of "multiplex cinemas" around the country are still dreadful
places (for any purpose) and will be dreadful right up until
the wrecking ball claims them. the premise that one could
actually show 15 movies at once in a small space simply beggars
the concept of "The Big Screen". but that's the status quo
for most of America outside hothouse enclaves.

"They're called 'average' because there's so many of them."

whether you dislike the unpleasent experience, dislike the
lame movies, or both, it should be no surprise that people
stay away in droves.
