Subject: Film Crew & Actors Arrested in NYC

August 29th:

The NYPD successfully cleared the streets of a dangerous underground thespian group yesterday. Director Stephen Marshall (who is also co-author of GNN's new book, True Lies), actress Rosario Dawson and her co-star Vija Brigita Grosgalvis were arrested Sunday morning while shooting This Revolution, GNN's first fictional feature film (a co-production with new indie prod-co Co.Op). The film is based on the seminal 1969 protest movie, Medium Cool, which was set against the backdrop of the police riots at the 1968 Democratic Convention.

It all went down as the crew was shooting a "protest" scene at 8th Avenue and 35th Street. Shortly after they began taping, a police van pulled up, several officers jumped out and immediately apprehended Rosario and Vija. Their crime: wearing black facemasks. In the film, the two play Black Bloc-ers who are protesting the war in Iraq. When Stephen tried to explain to the police that they were arresting actors in a fictional film, not real Black Bloc-ers, and that the crew had a permit from the city to be shooting on the street, he was arrested as well. On a collect call from a downtown holding cell, Stephen told me, "We had been shooting all week with our actors wearing black facemasks in the presence of police, and it wasn't a problem."

At least three cameras were rolling on the action, including one from BET. Reporters from several local newspapers also witnessed the incident.

Members of the film crew believe they were being surveilled by an undercover police officer, who alerted his compatriots of the crew's movements.

Stephen was charged with obstructing an officer, and it's still not clear what the two "Black Bloc-ers" were charged with. As of 9:30 pm Sunday, they were still incarcerated.
