I can confirm this based on the statistics from the networks I operate 
personally.  My cable modem (single IP address) is averaging 400 to 800 
scan/attack attempts per day, which is up from around 100 a year ago.

The larger network I operate has gone as high as 16,000 logged 
scan/attack attempts in 24 hours, and has settled at around 12,000 per 
day.  This compares to around 800 to 1,000 this time a year ago.  If 
this trend continues, it's going to move from being a nuisance to a 
major problem very, very quickly.
