Bob, thanks for this ... well said.  In 1989, immediately
after I attended the ACT ONE celebration of ARPANET 20 at
UCLA, I wrote up an article recording what had been said
there.  The article was published in American Scientist in
November 1989.  A slightly updated version of it was
republished in the book INTERNET BESIEGED 1997 and can be
found at http://cne.gmu.edu/pjd/PUBS/internet30.pdf .  It
is interesting that the story recorded there, which
reflected what all the key "players" were saying, is
different from the stories circulating today.  Many of
today's stories were prepared by various company PR
departments to further their company objectives, which do
not always include accurate reporting of history.  At the
ACT ONE conference, I remember Len Kleinrock leading a
little ceremony at which Paul Baran received a recognition
award for his seminal work in inventing the packet
switching concept.  Thankfully, Paul and his contemporary
Donald Davies are being remembered today for their
significant contributions.
