This link -- http://www.engadget.com/entry/4071088231142865/ -- has 
several comments about iPod Download.  The reality here is that they 
broke the interface in iTunes that allowed iPod Download to work as a 
plug-in.  This was likely to prevent the appearance of iTunes being 
used to copy music from an iPod.  There are many tools to move music 
off of an iPod since the iPod doesn't actually add any form of copy 
protection to the music files.  The files are organized in a 
complicated way, but they are all there.
