The presumption here is that the telecom companies are really important in all this -- perhaps they are not?

In order for these advanced services to be developed and rolled out, there will have to be media, finance, health-care, educational, governmental and other suppliers who have committed to next-generation services platforms. A new "on-demand" systems architecture has to be built -- why presume that Verizon et al are going to play a key role in all this?

Corporations "bypass" the telcos for their own traffic needs everyday. They will find a way to get to the consumers with these new services as well.

If the telcos act as a "bottleneck" then they will be bypassed as well -- the important question is what are the service providers doing, not what the telcos are not doing.
