# [Donation to aid search for extraterrestrials] [1] #

Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen has donated an additional $13.5
million toward the construction of 350 telescopes that will search for
signals from extraterrestrial beings around the clock, seven days a
week.

The announcement, made Thursday, brings the project almost halfway
toward its goal of raising $56 million to build the Allen Telescope
Array in a remote area of Northern California's Lassen National
Forest. It will be used by alien-hunters from the SETI Institute in
Mountain View and by astronomers at the University of
California-Berkeley. SETI stands for the Search for Extraterrestrial
Intelligence.

"Obviously the search for these signals in itself is a fascinating
thing," said Allen, whose foundation had earlier donated $11.5
million for developing the telescopes. He said the technology
involved, including a number of innovations that are being patented,
is "a breakthrough in the design of radio telescopes."
