Begin forwarded message: From: Steve Bellovin <smb () research att com> Date: June 12, 2004 10:08:59 PM EDT To: dave () farber net Subject: RIAA takes aim at digital radio The RIAA doesn't like digital radio, it seems -- it's afraid that people will listen to what they want instead of what they're being fed by the networks. Quite apart from the usual worry of "they'll record it and spread it all over the Internet" worry, they want even more. Their proposed system would permit time-shifting recorders, but would not recorders capable of breaking up a broadcast into individual songs. "RIAA officials said digital-radio players could soon allow listeners to record certain songs automatically when they are broadcast, allowing them to build a free library of music they otherwise might pay for". http://wired.com/news/digiwood/0,1412,63819,00.html?tw=wn_tophead_3 ------------------------------------- You are subscribed as interesting-people () lists elistx com To manage your subscription, go to http://v2.listbox.com/member/?listname=ip Archives at: http://www.interesting-people.org/archives/interesting-people/
