Dave-

Everyone concerned about the encroachment of our civil liberties by the government should see this movie made by an Irish film and distributed by the Irish Film Board. It is being shown in "art theatres" around the country.

This cinema veriteĀ“ movie covers the 7-month period from late 2001 though mid 2002 and the coup in Venezuela that removed Hugo Chavez, its constitutionally elected president. The coup was led by the 20% of the population (the wealthy class) that was about to lose their power and income in Chavez's attempt to more equitably distribute the country's oil revenue.

The first actions taken by the coup leaders was suspending the constitution, the parliament, the Supreme Court and the Ombudsman--all in the name of national security. In addition they imposed media censorship immediately. There had been and is no censorship under Chavez.

The revolution lasted only a day as the "poor people" arose and threw the coup leaders out. Chavez returned to power and very graciously dealt with the coup leaders--protecting their civil liberties.

The CIA and especially Colin Powell do not come out well. The CIA clearly had a hand in supporting the coup and Colin Powell is lying to the press while the movie's film crew is filming actual events in Caracas that are contradicting Powell's lies.

The bottom line is that if one can control the media (all but one of the TV networks in Venezuela are privately controlled by the coup backers) then one can completely distort actual events.

Could it happen here? See this flick and make your own judgment.
