Dear List:

For those of you who haven't heard, I'm sorry to tell you that Paul
Hoffman, manager of advanced technologies and associate director of ATS,
UCLA, died on Christmas Eve. Paul had been in remission from leukemia for
a while, but about a year ago it came back with a vengeance. He had been
in and out of the hospital for blood transfusions that were taking their
toll. He fought the good fight and still maintained his active social life
and his half-time position (he was moving slowly into full retirement) at
UCLA. After all of those years running programs and being on the road
speaking at academic and tech conferences, he was finally ready to turn in
his keys and spend his days kicking back at Zuma Beach and reading good noir.

He was recently instrumental in UCLA's Technology Sandbox (a program that
tests out new corporate technology and its applications - a great way for
corporations to support excellent tech education at a California
university) as well as UCLA's Visualization Portal (He loved this project.
I had a great experience with the technology when Paul set up for a video
conference between Len Kleinrock at UCLA and myself at DefCon '03 - it is
very cool technology, please see links below to learn more, and how you
might be able to use it for your organizations. The Portal rocks, spread
the word!). He contributed quite a bit to future technology by taking on
mentorees who work today as tech professionals all over the world. Paul
was a brilliant physicist who loved technology and life, his contributions
will live on. If you are interested in attending his upcoming service in
LA (the second one), please contact me soon for the details.

Any contributions can be sent in Paul's name (checks made out to) to the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Foundation, 6033 W. Century Blvd., Suite 300, Los
Angeles, 90066.
