Dave, CDs aren't going anywhere soon.

I wrote this in 2002:

"It might seem that portable MP3 players are certain to kill the personal CD player. But it's not that simple. Sales of personal CD players peaked in 2000 at 18.3 million units, according to NPDTechworld. More than 3 million MP3 players like the Rio and iPod will ship this year according to InStat/MDR. Oddly, MP3 music may ensure the CD's survival. Nearly 350,000 CD players sold in the U.S. this year support CDs with MP3 songs. Plain old CD players will start fading from view by 2005. "
