Antiterrorism strategy is questioned by ACLU

Sometimes it's someone who's lingering a bit too long near baggage
claim. Maybe it's a passenger whose eyes dart away when she sees a
state trooper. Or perhaps it's more peculiar behavior, like a man
wearing a buttoned-up trenchcoat in the middle of summer, or
traveling overseas with no luggage.

State Police stationed at Logan International Airport have been
trained to look for such signals, and have led the way nationally in
using "behavioral pattern recognition" to stop and question people
who are acting strangely at the airport.

Now, as they prepare for the city's first national political
convention, Boston police officers are being trained by their State
Police colleagues at Logan in those techniques. With about 35,000
people expected to descend on the city next July, officers are being
taught how to judge people's behavior to identify possible terrorists
in crowds, said Mariellen Burns, a Boston police spokeswoman.
