Subject: RE: [IP] Rumsfeld Pushes For Total Pentagon Control

I am no apologist for the current administration, nor do I hold Rumsfeld or
U.S. Attorney General Ashcroft in particularly high esteem. That said, when
people start getting all energized over the potential loss of civil
liberties that would flow from the passage of "the Patriot II Act" please
remember there is NO "Patriot II Act."

There is a draft, apparently, which no doubt is woefully obsolete by now
(for better or worse, who knows). Ashcroft has, on the record in Senate
testimony, denied the existence of any such "Patriot II Act."

He's probably playing fast and loose with the syntax; whatever follow on to
the Patriot Act there is most assuredly will not be called "Patriot II."

My point is, until there is an ACTUAL BILL introduced into either the House
or Senate it is far too premature to foaming at the mouth over lost civil
liberties and it makes those who are following this subject only at the
margins believe there really is a bill with such a name.
