Subject: UK 5.8 GHz Band- spectrum licensing issues

[UK spectrum and digital divide issues: After a government review last year
for "License Exempt Use" of 2.4 and 5.8 Ghz Bands, and the subsequent
instituting of a Wireless Advisory Group to accelerate access and address
the "Broadband Britain" social policy agenda, the UK government have
recently said that 5.8 GHz Band C- ie for BFWA Broadband Fixed Wireless
Access- will now be a "light licensing" scenario. Compare the US 5.8 GHz
U-NII Band, enshrining "unlicensed" as a regulatory principle, and enabling
the take-off of WISPs especially in rural areas. - JW]

Pressure from the Ministry of Defence means that 5.8GHz probably won't be
licence-exempt, which some claim will make it harder for wireless to close
the digital divide
