Below are details of an exciting lecture InSITeS is hosting next week on
behalf of Carnegie Mellon. For those who missed last November's lecture by
Google CEO Eric Schmidt, "Sustaining Success in a Challenging Economy," or
last week's panel, "Computer Surveillance and the War on Terrorism:
Promoting National Security or a Return to McCarthyism?" featuring Jon
Delano, David Farber, Pradeep Khosla, Peter Madsen, Peter Shane, and

Verizon Lecture Event
Speaker: Bruno Lanvin, Program Manager, infoDev, World Bank
Date: Thursday March 13
Time: 12:30 - 2:00pm
Location: Hamburg Hall Auditorium

Bruno Lanvin, program manager for the World Bank's outreach program, will
give a Verizon Foundation Distinguished Lecture at 12:30 p.m. Thursday,
March 13, in Hamburg Hall. Lanvin will discuss the global "digital divide,"
as well as efforts to foster international social and economic development
through technology.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Before joining the World Bank in 2000, Bruno Lanvin was the head of
Electronic Commerce in UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and
Development) in Geneva, and held several high-level positions in the United
Nations, specializing in international trade issues related to services and
telecommunications. From 2000 to 2002 he was the executive secretary of DOT
Force, the Digital Opportunity Task Force set up by the G-8 in July 2000.
Lanvin holds an M.A. in mathematics and physics, an MBA from the Ecole des
Hautes Etudes Commerciales in Paris, France, and a Ph.D. in economics from
La Sorbonne.

The Verizon Foundation Distinguished Lecture series was established at
Carnegie Mellon's H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management
in 1998 to bring experts in the telecommunications and information
technology fields to the university. The Verizon series facilitates sharing
ideas, discussing trends, exploring applications of technology and
investigating the effects of technology on the broader society.

Lanvin's lecture is coordinated by Carnegie Mellon's Institute for the
Study of Information Technology and Society (InSITeS). The institute draws
on the expertise of about 60 Carnegie Mellon faculty from a variety of
disciplines, plus an equally large national network of leading legal
thinkers, and fosters collaboration in research, curricular development,
policy analysis and public outreach projects aimed at addressing the
social, economic, political, ethical, psychological, cultural and legal
aspects of information technology.
