West Coast cities most unwired

The West Coast leads the United States in availability of wireless
Internet access, a new survey shows. The most "unwired city" in
America is Portland, Ore., followed by the San Francisco Bay Area;
Austin, Texas; and Orange County, Calif. The top East Coast city on
the list is Washington, D.C., in sixth place.

Intel's (INTC: news, msgs) survey found more than 3,700 "hot spots"
in the U.S., primarily at cafes, coffee shops, airports and hotels.
Hot spots are places where wireless Web access is available to the
public. Hot spots appear in "unexpected locations," said Bert
Sperling of Best Places, who conducted the study. He found wireless
access available in a barbershop on New York's Long Island, a
chowder house in Seattle, a pub near California's Lake Tahoe and a
pool hall on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

"Wi-Fi promises to do for computing what cell phones did for voice
communication. It is eliminating boundaries and allowing people to
access the Internet and communicate freely while they're on the go,"
said Sean Maloney, general manager of Intel's communications group.
The complete survey is available on Intel's Web site.
