Subject: Symposium on Cybersmear

Hi Cornell alumni!

As Cornellians pride themselves on being involved in the most controversial
and exciting events in our society, I thought perhaps the following event
might interest some alumni:

Rutgers School of Law--Newark will be hosting a Symposium on April 3, 2003
at 6:30 p.m. at the law school.  The topic of the Symposium is "Cybersmear,"
which is a new phenomenon that has arisen with the increase in Internet
services. Employees post messages or use chat rooms to vent about their
employers under the security of anonymous screen names.  Employers are then
suing employees for this "cybersmear."  How can employers sue when the only
information they have is a screen name?  They serve subpoenaes on Internet
service providers, forcing the providers to release information--including
names and addresses--that registered users gave when signing up for
service.  Legal issues clearly begin to abound, with topics ranging from
free speech to privacy to employment law concerns.

The Symposium will feature three speakers:
Alan Hyde, Esq. -- Professor of Law, Rutgers School of Law--Newark
Paul Levy, Esq. -- Public Citizen Litigation Group (a public interest law
firm founded by Ralph Nader, located in Washington, D.C.)
Peter Pizzi, Esq. -- Partner, Connell Foley

If you're interested in more info, please contact Kristen at
kmb30 () cornell edu.  Thanks!
