The 'civil rights' group in your last post is affiliated with the Islamic
group, CAIR.
Of course, the truth of something, or even that thing's worth, does not
depend on its sponsors or its friends. But it pays to ask. So here's one set
of claims about CAIR, and the response;

From http://www.danielpipes.org/article/394
CAIR: 'Moderate' friends of terror
by Daniel Pipes
New York Post
April 22, 2002
The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations presents itself
as just another civil-rights group. "We are similar to a Muslim NAACP," says
spokesman Ibrahim Hooper. Its public language - about promoting "interest
and understanding among the general public with regards to Islam and Muslims
in North America" - certainly boosts an image of moderation.

....In reality, CAIR is something quite different. For starters, it's on the
wrong side in the war on terrorism. One indication came in October 1998,
when the group demanded the removal of a Los Angeles billboard describing
Osama bin Laden as "the sworn enemy," finding this depiction "offensive to
Muslims."

The same year, CAIR denied bin Laden's responsibility for the twin East
African embassy bombings. As Hooper saw it, those explosions resulted from
some vague "misunderstandings of both sides." (A New York court, however,
blamed bin Laden's side alone for the embassy blasts.)

In 2001, CAIR denied his culpability for the Sept. 11 massacre, saying only
that "if [note the "if"] Osama bin Laden was behind it, we condemn him by
name." (Only in December was CAIR finally embarrassed into acknowledging his
role.)

CAIR consistently defends other militant Islamic terrorists too. The
conviction of the perpetrators of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing it
deemed "a travesty of justice." The conviction of Omar Abdel Rahman, the
blind sheikh who planned to blow up New York City landmarks, it called a
"hate crime." The extradition order for suspected Hamas terrorist Mousa Abu
Marook it labeled "anti-Islamic" and "anti-American."

Not surprisingly, CAIR also backs those who finance terrorism. When
President Bush closed the Holy Land Foundation in December for collecting
money he said was "used to support the Hamas terror organization," CAIR
decried his action as "unjust" and "disturbing."

CAIR even includes at least one person associated with terrorism in its own
ranks. On Feb. 2, 1995, U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White named Siraj Wahhaj as
one of the "unindicted persons who may be alleged as co-conspirators" in the
attempt to blow up New York City monuments. Yet CAIR deems him "one of the
most respected Muslim leaders in America" and includes him on its advisory
board.

For these and other reasons, the FBI's former chief of counterterrorism,
Steven Pomerantz, concludes that "CAIR, its leaders and its activities
effectively give aid to international terrorist groups."

....Promoting anti-Semitism. The head of CAIR's Los Angeles office, Hussam
Ayloush, routinely uses the term "zionazi" when referring to Israelis. CAIR
co-hosted an event in May 1998 at which an Egyptian militant Islamic leader,
Wagdi Ghunaym, called Jews the "descendants of the apes."

.... CAIR's real record is one of extremism. North American Muslims
themselves are beginning to discover - and the government, leading media,
churches, and businesses should follow - that CAIR represents not the noble
civilization of Islam but an aggressive and radical strain similar to that
which led to the suicide hijackings last September. CAIR must be shunned as
a fringe group by responsible institutions and individuals throughout North
America.

RESPONSE; http://www.cair-net.org/misc/people/daniel_pipes.html

....... Throughout his career, Daniel Pipes has exhibited a troubling
bigotry toward Muslims and Islam. As early as 1983, even an otherwise
positive Washington Post book review noted that Pipes displays "a disturbing
hostility to contemporary Muslims...he professes respect for Muslims but is
frequently contemptuous of them." Pipes, said the reviewer, "is swayed by
the writings of anti-Muslim writers...[the book] is marred by exaggerations,
inconsistencies, and evidence of hostility to the subject." (The Washington
Post, 12/11/83)

In The Weekly Standard (1/22/96), Pipes offered a glowing review of the
infamous anti-Muslim book "Why I Am Not a Muslim." The National Catholic
Reporter (11/17/95) called that book "the literary equivalent of hate
radio...literary warfare against Islam," useful only to those "interested in
returning to the polemical past to do battle with Islamic believers." Pipes
called the book "quite brilliant" and "startlingly novel." "This religion
would seem to have nothing functional to offer," remarked Pipes.

Recently, Pipes questioned the origins of the Quran, Islam's revealed text,
and questioned whether the Prophet Muhammad ever existed.

He wrote: "The Koran is a not 'a product of Muhammad or even of Arabia,'
but a collection of earlier Judeo-Christian liturgical materials stitched
together to meet the needs of a later age...A few scholars go even further,
doubting even the existence of Muhammad." (The Jerusalem Post, 5/12/2000)

According to Pipes, the night journey of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to
Jerusalem referred to in the Quran (17:1) never occurred. This event, known
as "al-Isra wa al-Miraj," is marked each year by millions of Muslims
worldwide. In the Los Angeles Times, Pipes wrote: "The Prophet Mohammed
never went to the city, nor did he have ties to it." (7/21/2000)

Pipes also displays a racist's distaste for Muslim immigrants who "wish to
import the customs of the Middle East and South Asia." (Los Angeles Times,
7/22/99) For Pipes, this sort of raw bigotry is nothing new....

Professor Farber,

I promised these people I'd send this information on to you.

I believe the NJ Civil Rights Defense Committee is doing important
work in empowering American residents at risk of being locked up in
DHS detention centers indefinitely, by teaching members of high-risk
communities how to protect the civil rights of people who have been
detained.

Kim

The purpose of the training is to teach individuals how to "Become a
Witness" to Defend Civil Rights.

This training may be of particular interest to members of the Arabic
and Latino communities. You may know people interested in
participating in this training workshop. It is free and no
registration is required.

The workshop is being offered by the NJ Civil Rights Defense Committee.
Their contact info is as follows:
website is <http://www.nj-civilrights.org>http://www.nj-civilrights.org
email: njcrdc () nwunj org
cellphone: 646-247-3238

The training takes place at Rutgers Law School in Newark, NJ.

Arabic communities have received a great deal of negative attention
in the months following the WTC tragedy on September 11. However,
other communities have been affected as well.

Members of the NJ Civil Rights Defense Committee visit the DHS prison
population. The majority of people in DHS detention in New Jersey are
Hispanics.

Ashcroft made public a statement 3 weeks ago stating that any
immigrant without proper papers will be detained indefinitely. The
NJCRDC is concerned that the number of detainees will continue to
rise.

From another source, I heard that in Miami yesterday, a large number
of residents were detained by the DHS.

Men of 25 countries were made to register with the INS recently,
which has been renamed to the Department of Homeland Security. The
DHS has stated that 13,000 of those people with legal documentation
to reside in the US who registered will soon be deported from the US.
They have been judged by the DHS to be linked with terrorist
activities.

Under the US Patriot Act, no evidence is required to accuse any
individual of terrorist activities, detentions are not open to public
scrutiny and trials deciding on the fate of individuals accused of
terrorism is not held in open courtrooms.

Directions to the Civil Rights Training Workshop:
Route 280 into Newark
Take exit 14 onto Martin Luther King Boulevard, heading south
Follow signs to Newark Rutgers
Turn left on Washington Street
Look for Law School

Saturday, June 21st
11 am - 1 pm
Newark Rutgers Law School
(123 Washington Street) Room 20

Please forward this notice to any interested persons.

All best,

Kimi
