I believe the NJ Civil Rights Defense Committee is doing important work in empowering American residents at risk of being locked up in DHS detention centers indefinitely, by teaching members of high-risk communities how to protect the civil rights of people who have been detained. Kim The purpose of the training is to teach individuals how to "Become a Witness" to Defend Civil Rights. This training may be of particular interest to members of the Arabic and Latino communities. You may know people interested in participating in this training workshop. It is free and no registration is required. The workshop is being offered by the NJ Civil Rights Defense Committee. Their contact info is as follows: website is <http://www.nj-civilrights.org>http://www.nj-civilrights.org email: njcrdc () nwunj org cellphone: 646-247-3238 The training takes place at Rutgers Law School in Newark, NJ. Arabic communities have received a great deal of negative attention in the months following the WTC tragedy on September 11. However, other communities have been affected as well. Members of the NJ Civil Rights Defense Committee visit the DHS prison population. The majority of people in DHS detention in New Jersey are Hispanics. Ashcroft made public a statement 3 weeks ago stating that any immigrant without proper papers will be detained indefinitely. The NJCRDC is concerned that the number of detainees will continue to rise. From another source, I heard that in Miami yesterday, a large number of residents were detained by the DHS. Men of 25 countries were made to register with the INS recently, which has been renamed to the Department of Homeland Security. The DHS has stated that 13,000 of those people with legal documentation to reside in the US who registered will soon be deported from the US. They have been judged by the DHS to be linked with terrorist activities. Under the US Patriot Act, no evidence is required to accuse any individual of terrorist activities, detentions are not open to public scrutiny and trials deciding on the fate of individuals accused of terrorism is not held in open courtrooms.
