The comments are so absurd I did a check to make sure there wasn't a DNS
hack on my machine. It reads like the onion, and having met Senator Hatch
and discussed Copyright law and policy with him, this just seems bizarre.
The only explanation I can come up with is maybe that the Senator was
completely sarcastic in his comments, and the Wash. Post reporter either
read only the transcript, or was simply out to get Hatch.

Here's the response from Hatch's office (provided by Michael Roe on the PHO
list--who spoke to Hatch's office):

Washington - Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary
Committee, today issued the following statement:

"I am very concerned about Internet piracy of personal and copyrighted
materials, and I want to find effective solutions to these problems.

"I made my comments at yesterday's hearing because I think that industry is
not doing enough to help us find effective ways to stop people from using
computers to steal copyrighted, personal or sensitive materials. I do not
favor extreme remedies - unless no moderate remedies can be found. I asked
the interested industries to help us find those moderate remedies."

Note that the Post reporter goes to HOUSE Democrat Boucher for the "urging
to reconsider" -- that's coming from Boucher?? Boucher wasn't even at the
hearing (he being a Congressman, not a Senator). There is not one primary
source (somebody who was at the hearing) quoted in the piece. The reporter
even makes Berman (the P2P Hackman) look like a saner, more reasonable man.
Seems a little fishy.

Travis
