Hi, Dave,

In a recent flight from Honolulu to LAX, I experienced a new TSA policy.

On entering the metal detector at the primary screening point, I was instructed to remove my rubber-soled Docksider shoes. I mentioned that they didn't have metal in them and didn't set off detectors (having been worn through LAX, Heathrow, and Vienna in the prior 2 days).

I was told that I had two options:

        1) remove the shoes and have them x-ray'd

        2) wear the shoes, at which point, regardless of whether the
detector went off or not, I would be subject to a manual search

There were no signs of this new policy at the airport. When I asked about it, I was told "I'm just doing my job".

A quick look at the TSA's website indicated:

http://www.tsa.gov/public/display?theme=1&content=583

I.e., that shoe removal is NOT required, and that search happens ONLY if detectors go of. Unfortunately, it's hard to check this and call them on it while in line.

Anyone else have similar "TSA creative policy fabrication" experiences? Who's minding the shop?

Joe
