Among those on the panel was Michael Liubinskas, marketing manager of Sharman Networks, the transnational Internet company with headquarters in Sydney that distributes filesharing software, Kazaa Media Desktop. In a halting voice that often dropped to the level of a mumble Liubinskas did nothing to deflect the criticisms of detractors such as the Australian Record Industry Association, which says Kazaa's business is built on providing a conduit so the unscrupulous can steal the intellectual property of others. While pointing to the phenomenal success of Kazaa with its more than 253.5 million downloads he refused to say what sort of customers Sharman attracts, or why they use the software. "My role as head of marketing is not to talk about (legal issues)," Liubinskas said. "We generate revenue like a lot of other free services from advertising and building up a (customer) base."
