Hi Dave

A proposed supercomputer simulation could quantify for the first time key
truths surrounding cross-media ownership laws in Australia.

Rob Stocker, a lecturer and PhD student from Charles Sturt University in
NSW, will simulate the effect media organisations have on public opinion in
a series of computational runs. The complex relationships between people and
the media they consume has been reduced to a series of assumptions and fed
into an algorithm that he hopes will shed light on the reasons why the
public chooses certain opinions.

Early sample runs through the simulation confirm the worst fears of those
opposed to increased concentration of media into a few powerful hands,
Stocker says. He simulated a single media outlet ("node") with a high level
of influence over 100 simulated citizens ("sims"). The sims could interact
among themselves but found themselves increasingly falling into line behind
the central media outlet.

"As time spent connected to the media increased, there was rapid conversion
to the media state," Stocker says.
