Subject: Samsung-Symbian deal is a blow to Microsoft

For IP:

Without a monopoly advantage, Microsoft has a difficult time competing
in new markets or on level playing fields. This follows the X-Box as
another high profile, highly funded project which failed to get any
real traction in a non-PC space.

Other than the Puget Sound Business Journal in Seattle, I haven't seen
this story carried anywhere else . . .

Samsung-Symbian deal is a blow to Microsoft

Microsoft Corp.'s push to establish its Windows software in the
wireless world suffered a blow Monday when Samsung Electronics,
Microsoft's only licensee among large wireless-phone manufacturers,
bought a 5 percent stake in the Symbian Ltd. consortium, maker of a
rival operating system.

An official of South Korea-based Samsung was quoted in press reports as
saying, "Microsoft has put a lot of effort into promoting their
operating system, but the product was not perfect and was not
well-received. They have tried to push the operating system in the
European market but have not been successful."

Samsung is the third-largest maker of wireless phones. Although it had
previously licensed the Symbian technology as well as Microsoft's, the
investment deal is seen as signalling its commitment to focus on
Symbian's operating system rather than on Windows
