This is fascinating ...  Keep in mind that photography
(the daguerreotype) dates from around 1840; the pictures
on the site whose URL is below date from 1906.

Prokudin-Gorskii who invented a three-negative color separation process.
It's a fun two-minute tour of his invention and a picture from the old
collection.
