Hi Dave:

The BBC did a survey of 11,000 people worldwide, asking them to consider the impact of US policies and culture. Here are the results. They're fascinating.

These graphs in fact formed the back-drop to a thought-provoking one hour "global television debate" on the main BBC TV Channel a month or so ago, one involving a very interesting set of international commentators - which in fact is still available for viewing on the BBC web-site via RealOne Player. (This is not too evident from the above page, or any of the pages of graphs, but can be reached via the text "What the World thinks of America" which is in fact an inconspicuous link in the top right hand corner of each page.)

To my mind the most startling statistic, much commented on in the programme, was that in South Korea, the answer to the question "Who is more dangerous: America or North Korea?", was 48% USA, 39% North Korea!

However the limitations of opinion polls are illustrated by the following quote from the description of the TV programme:

"Homer Simpson, the lovable head of the Simpson family, has been nominated the greatest American ever in an online poll ahead of the BBC-led global debate, What The World Thinks of America.

The cartoon character received 47.17% of the vote beating former United States President Abraham Lincoln, who received 9.67% and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jnr, with 8.54% of the vote..."

Cheers
