Schon Shown the Door
When charges surfaced that work by Lucent Bell Labs researcher Jan
Hendrik Schon might be seriously flawed, the hope was that the
defects would prove minor or incidental. But the labs' investigation
has dashed all such hopes

Who's Responsible?
The Bell Labs fiasco points out that the duties of coauthors are not
clearly defined. But could spelling them out put a chill on
collaborative research?

An Investigator Speaks Out
Herbert Kroemer, winner of the IEEE's 2002 Medal of Honor and the
2000 Nobel Prize in Physics, was one of five members of the committee
that investigated allegations of scientific misconduct at Bell Labs.
The panel exonerated 20 coauthors of any misconduct, but struggled
with what responsibility they had for the veracity of research papers
they signed.

Taking it all Back
Schön's papers and patent applications are being withdrawn
