Farnsworth and the birth of television Dave, Nor did IBM invent the stored program controlled computer -- they just got rich from it. David Sarnoff, who was my uncle Bernard's first cousin, was a visionary. He used to come home and tell the family about this new gizmo that would sit in everyone's living-room someday, and would show pictures that were broadcast remotely like radio. The family thought he was nuts. (BTW, Sarnoff, as a very young man, also happened to be the telegraph operator who was on duty when the distress calls started coming in from the Titanic.)
