Pressplay opens up net access

Pressplay, the online music provider owned by Sony Music Entertainment and
Vivendi's Universal Music Group, yesterday announced that it would allow
subscribers to burn "unlimited" amounts of songs on to blank CDs and to
transfer the music to a range of portable devices.

The move represents a significant change in the music industry's attitudes
to people copying music from the internet. Until now Pressplay and other
online music services set up by the big record companies have had crippling
restrictions on how much music consumers can download or burn on to a CD
each month.

These official online services have been criticised for failing to offer
users a viable alternative to the free, illicit music swapping networks such
as Morpheus, Kazaa and the now-defunct Napster.
