    San Francisco Opera will host a read-through of the libretto for Lewis
Spratlan¹s "Earthrise," the company¹s first mini-commission addressing
issues of cloning and genetic manipulation, at 7 p.m., Aug. 19, at the War
Memorial Opera House, 5th floor Chorus Room.

    Following the read-through will be a "facilitated public dialogue," says
the announcement, with the participation of specialists from the scientific
community: Michael Marmor, MD, ophthalmologist at Stanford Medical Center,
amateur clarinetist and SFO patron; Tania Simoncelli, Program Director at
the Center for Genetics and Society, professional cellist; Paul Billings,
MD, Co-Founder and Executive Vice-President, Chief Scientific and Medical
Officer of GeneSage, Inc.; and Richard Strohman, PhD, Professor Emeritus of
Molecular and Cell Biology, University of California Berkeley.

    Composer Spratlan and librettist Constance Congdon will attend the
read-through, which will be performed by actors from Theatre Rhinoceros.
Elizabeth Benedict will portray lab scientist Fauna Bo-Pibulum. Douglas
Holsclaw, Stephanie Taylor, Jenny Lord and Kathleen Antonia will read the
roles of Leo, Margueritte, Adrianna and Janet, respectively. Jeff Manabat
plays Wilder, Fauna¹s experimental test-tube offspring.

    I am scratching my head, but would attend if I didn't have a prior
engagement (the Moscow Radio Orchestra, in Usher Hall).
