Subject: Google's referral rate now almost equals Yahoo's

Today a "Web analytics" (analyzes Web traffic patterns) company,
WebSiteStory, claiming that the referral rate from Google
is almost neck and neck with Yahoo. The "referral rate"
is a measure of market share among search engines. Web
server logs include the "referring URL" from which you
can divine which search engines (and which search terms)
lead to a given site across time.

They report that Google had 1% of the referrals in June 2000.
In less than two years they have grown to 31.87%. In the same
time period, Yahoo has fallen from 46% to 36.35%.

If the trend continues -- and I bet it will -- Google will top
Yahoo in a month or two.  That will be a symbolically huge moment;
Yahoo has had the mindshare of the public ever since its launch.
