Norm cared deeply about teaching, students, and the profession. We
will miss him.

On Thursday, April 25, Dr. Norman E. Gibbs passed away unexpectedly
in Muncie, IN. Norm was born 60 years ago in Keyport, NJ. He
received his B.S. from Ursinus College, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from
Purdue University; Dr. Gibbs was the 14th recipient of a PhD in
computer science from Purdue.

Subsequent to his graduation in 1969, Norm held faculty positions at
the College of William & Mary (1969-1981), where he helped establish
the CS degree program; at Arizona State University (1981-1983), where
he established the PhD program in CS; and Bowdoin College
(1983-1985), where he also served as chairman. During this time,
Professor Gibbs co-founded the Liberal Arts Computer Science
Consortium (LACS).

In 1985, Dr. Gibbs became the first director of the Software
Engineering Institute's Education Program. While at the SEI, he was
involved in the development and early growth of the CERT/CC, the
SEI's distance education program, the SEI's continuing education
program, and CMU's professional Master's of Software Engineering
degree program. At the SEI and CMU until 1995, he served in several
other administrative roles, and as a professor of software
engineering.

From 1995 until 1998, Dr. Gibbs was the director of Information
Technology at Guilford College in North Carolina. From 1998 to 2000
he was a Professor in Residence, and the Executive Director of the
Connecticut Information Technology Institute at the University of
Connecticut. In 2000, Norm assumed the position of Chair of the
Department of Computer Science at Ball State University in Muncie,
IN, where he remained until his death. In 2001, Norm joined the
external Advisory Board of the Purdue University CERIAS.

In addition to his research and his leadership in education, Dr.
Gibbs was very active in ACM, including service on the ACM Council
and as chair of the ACM SIG Board in the mid 1980s. In 1994, Norm was
awarded the SIGCSE Award for Outstanding Contributions to Computer
Science Education.

Norm is survived by his wife Barbara, and two daughters. Memorial
contributions in Norm's memory may be directed to the American Cancer
Society.
