We will miss him. On Thursday, April 25, Dr. Norman E. Gibbs passed away unexpectedly in Muncie, IN. Norm was born 60 years ago in Keyport, NJ. He received his B.S. from Ursinus College, and his M.S. and Ph.D. from Purdue University; Dr. Gibbs was the 14th recipient of a PhD in computer science from Purdue. Subsequent to his graduation in 1969, Norm held faculty positions at the College of William & Mary (1969-1981), where he helped establish the CS degree program; at Arizona State University (1981-1983), where he established the PhD program in CS; and Bowdoin College (1983-1985), where he also served as chairman. During this time, Professor Gibbs co-founded the Liberal Arts Computer Science Consortium (LACS). In 1985, Dr. Gibbs became the first director of the Software Engineering Institute's Education Program. While at the SEI, he was involved in the development and early growth of the CERT/CC, the SEI's distance education program, the SEI's continuing education program, and CMU's professional Master's of Software Engineering degree program. At the SEI and CMU until 1995, he served in several other administrative roles, and as a professor of software engineering. From 1995 until 1998, Dr. Gibbs was the director of Information Technology at Guilford College in North Carolina. From 1998 to 2000 he was a Professor in Residence, and the Executive Director of the Connecticut Information Technology Institute at the University of Connecticut. In 2000, Norm assumed the position of Chair of the Department of Computer Science at Ball State University in Muncie, IN, where he remained until his death. In 2001, Norm joined the external Advisory Board of the Purdue University CERIAS. In addition to his research and his leadership in education, Dr. Gibbs was very active in ACM, including service on the ACM Council and as chair of the ACM SIG Board in the mid 1980s. In 1994, Norm was awarded the SIGCSE Award for Outstanding Contributions to Computer Science Education. Norm is survived by his wife Barbara, and two daughters.
