Some United flights depart from an area that passes through an area under the control of INS. Waiting for my flight one INS agent stopped by the gate, showed his ID, and entered the corridor that goes (without further checks) to both airplanes and the INS stations on the lower levels. Another INS agent, however, passed through security without showing any ID (the gate attendant was busy with passengers). Thus, a human being with a side arm, passed into a secure area without any ID check. He was, of course, uniformed. Still, no one even glanced at him. I reported this to the gate agent and to the pilot of the aircraft. They took it seriously, but who knows what power they really have.
